Checking In…January Goals Update

Hello friends!

Time to check in (as promised) on my 2020 goals. If you missed what I’m doing, check out the original post here. This post may contain affiliate links.*

Get back on the fitness/wellness track. Because of my birthday, I slow rolled into this one. I re-joined WW which I’ve been doing on and off for 16 years and am making some progress. I am eating better and making an effort to walk more and drinking more water. Hopefully, I’ll have a good report for February.

Read 30 books. I read two novels and one faith based book (details below). I am almost finished with a third novel. The novels were:

A Very Nantucket Christmas-I requested this from the library in December but it didn’t make it until after Christmas. I read it anyway. It’s actually two short novels in one. I enjoyed the second one more than the first. I love books set in Nantucket and this was a lighthearted holiday read.

Such a Fun Age-I was not familiar with this book but later learned it was one of Reece Witherspoon’s book club picks (if that means anything to you). This was a fast read for me and I liked it very much.

Giver of Stars-I’m currently reading this as part of an online book club that my alma mater is hosting and I am LOVING it. I’m almost finished so you’ll be hearing more next month on this one!

Read 6 faith based/spiritual type books this year.

I read Joyce Meyer’s Good Health, Good Life: 12 Keys to Enjoying Physical and Spiritual Wellness. I’ve had this book for awhile but hadn’t read it. It’s a short book in both length and physical stature. There’s nothing earth breaking in Joyce’s keys for healthy living but it was a good motivator to kick off a new year. I always enjoy that Joyce mentions her personal devotion to health and wellness in her talks so it was nice to read one of her books devoted to that topic.

No social media from 5pm to 8pm. GAME CHANGER!!  This is the best thing I’ve done. Seriously. Not only is it freeing up time, it’s decluttering my mind. I don’t miss it at all. Most nights I don’t bother to pick my phone up when my time limit runs out.

Weekly meal plans/prep. I’m doing okay with this. I use a Happy Planner and there is a meal planning section in it that I use to jot down meals and plan my grocery list. I don’t get so specific as to say “On Monday, we will have meatloaf, Tuesday we will have pork chops..” I just write down possibilities and then make sure I have the groceries on hand to make them. I also try to prep a few things on Sunday for my lunches/breakfasts.

Try one new recipe per month. I made SkinnyTaste’s Buffalo Chicken Dip knowing full well that I would be the only one in my house to eat it. No shame. It made a great snack paired with celery and was healthier and more satisfying than say, a bag of chips. It really doesn’t taste light at all.

Blog one new recipe per month. I got my Country Fruit Saladrecipe posted.

Develop and stick with a house cleaning plan. I’m struggling with this one. The first couple of weeks I did great and then I fell apart with it. My planner has a Chores section and I’m trying to use it to develop my own plan. I am doing better in some areas but not where I want to be. Good thing the year still has 11 months left!

Find a tv show that I like to watch. I started watching YOU on Netflix which is darker than my normal fare but I wanted to understand all the Joe memes I kept seeing. I also started the new Masterpiece show Sanditon on PBS.

Send a hand written card to someone each month. When I wrote this goal, I had someone in mind to be the first recipient. A treasured colleague and friend was going through health issues. I sent her a card of encouragement and told her how much she meant to me and my family. She passed away a couple of weeks later, and I am so thankful I took the time to send that card. I also sent a birthday card this month.
